The painting depicts a view of the lake Averno in Campi Flegrei. the volcanic lake of the ancient Romans was considered one of the gates to Hades. The term "Averno" comes from the poet Lucretius and means "place without birds." The painting is part of the series "Phlegrèus" composed of twenty to twenty works inspired by places of the Campi Flegrei, the land of fire. The large volcan that is located in the north of the city of Naples, protragonista of many historical events from Ancient Greece, the Romans, the Middle Ages, the Grand Tour
The work is performed in a mixed technique of engraving with etching.
