Artist's description:

Over the last 18 months I've been revisiting the work of Sir Howard Hodgkin.  When I first visited an exhibition as an further education student in London in 1993 I disliked his work, I didn't understand it at all and felt afraid by what I saw.  However, the emotional and striking images wouldn't leave me and soon I was completely fascinated by his work.
My cousin lived next door to Hodgkin in London and I could see the glass roof of his studio from my cousin's kitchen window.  It was exciting to be near a real painting hero!

Ten years ago I had the privilege of seeing Howard Hodgkin one day at an upstairs window of his home.  He was shouting out of the window at a woman (with a great bunch of flowers in her hand at his door) "Go away, I don't want your flowers".  I think that summed up everything I loved about the artist - no nonsense!
I started this painting in 2015 as a homage to Hodgkin, and when he sadly died this year I returned to the painting.  As the title suggests it's about Hodgkin's love for India, but I also wanted to suggest the love India and the rest of the world has for Hodgkin's work. The painting is one of a series of paintings inspired by Hodgkin and his uncompromising approach.
Hodgkin has had a profound influence on my painting since 1993 and visiting the ‘Absent Friends’ exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery (London) and 'Painting India' at The Hepworth (Wakefield) this summer reminded me of the importance of my own drive to paint and not compromise.

The oil paints are very good quality pigment and I use a green alternative to traditional turpentine and white spirit.
