Hope sits nude on a curvaceous chair, wrapped in an old rope (twisted natural manila.) Twisted manila is the strongest of all natural fiber ropes. Its scale to the body is visually imposing and it implies that the cable is sturdy enough to suspend her weight. It represents tradition and strength that can inspire us but also hold us back. Compositionally, the rope provides an alternate set of curves as it snakes through the image. The delicate tones of this image are inspired by traditional media of pencil and pastel. The use of negative space and faded hues give the viewer distance from the subject, almost like a memory rather than a moment in the present.

This artwork’s technique falls in the category of toned and monochrome prints. The processes are inspired by classic photographic techniques of chemical toning applied to black and white photographs, such as selenium, sepia, cyanotype, and platinum. A selection of two or more colors are mapped across the darks and lights of the image. The intensity is selectively adjusted in specific areas. I subdue the color in an image to draw the viewer through the shapes and lines of the composition. I choose monochromatic or muted tones when color would be a distraction from the composition and compel an emotional reaction.
