Artist's description:

"Hope" was built on over several weeks. To keep the spontaneity and the freshness of the gesture, I worked no longer than 30 minutes at a time on the piece. It was built alongside 4 other artworks of the same size.

Each took different length of time to be completed, and conveys a different energy with different colours.

This artwork took many forms before its completion, and took me a whole year to finish. I struggled to find its direction, layering different colours and using different technics. This gives a sense of depth, although the actual main shapes are condensed and subdued.
I had given up on the work and was about to cover the whole canvas in this glowing pink when I realised the process had woken up the whole painting... I was then able to complete it, and its title came naturally!
As a result it carries a quiet strength, one that has been acquired, and which is there to stay.

The sides of the canvas are part of the story. It is a remaining trace of what the painting went through to eventually reach its final stage. You might find traces of colours that are not present in the painting, but that are an essential part of the process. I like to keep the sides raw as they carry information on the evolution of the painting.
