Artwork description:

Some days, I feel like the end of the world is here. Some days feel like all is lost. This is my response to those days, and a reminder to myself, that as long as hope exists, all is not lost. The image itself started out as a drawing as a part of the Inktober event in 2021. Then I had this crazy idea, 'why not try and make a photographic version of the drawing?'

So I set out to do just that, to turn ink to a digital piece. I used several photographs from my collection to create the composition, but the fire, my goodness, the fire was a real challenge. It took my Photoshop experience to its limits. I tried fire brushes, but they didn't look right. I tried hand painting it, but that didn't look right either. In the end, I had to resort to real fire to make it work, but that's another story.

The end result has different meanings, depending on your point of view. I like the fact you can ascribe several different narratives to the piece, and whatever one works for you is just fine. The original of this piece was selected to hang in the Cowbridge Open Art exhibition of 2022.

A 1/1 mixed media digital piece, produced with a mixture of vintage and antique vernacular photography from the artist's collection, digital paint, pencils and varnish.

The piece is Giclée printed on high-end archival Canson Infinity Photorag, and coated with a satin Giclée varnish. It is supplied in an A2 sized mount to fit directly into any standard A2 sized frame. The piece is signed and numbered on the front.

Materials used:

Canson Infinity 220gsm Photorag paper, antique photographs, giclée print, giclée varnish, mountboard
