What a hot day for painting at Honolulu Harbor! The water was that deep turquoise blue that is so phenomenal, like the blue from a top quality gem sapphire. The boats in the water with their colorful hulls and rigging in white, red and green are inspirational to paint. There is so much reflection of light and color from the water that it bounces around everywhere creating very interesting varieties of hue where you don't expect them. The great masses of the hulls against the thin lines of rigging create extreme contrasts which, along with the transparency of the water, means very interesting painting. Fortunately, that day I had the use of an umbrella for shade so I could avoid heat stroke!
