This piece is illustrated using black ink over a lightly acrylic and watercolour painted 300gsm, cold pressed watercolour paper.
The piece portrays a positive and negative male side profile. I wanted to depict inner conflict and the emotions we choose to hide, masked behind beauty.
I approached the piece like I would a sculpture by imagining a solid canvas and carving away, removing solid material until I had the positive silhouette I was happy with. I then removed more material from inside the silhouette to depict the negative profile.
The positive portrait is subtly smiling while his inner portrait is seen to be contemplating and/or unhappy. Like the subject matter, I chose to subtly hide the depiction behind a pastel coloured background and chose a model whose natural beauty could complete an uplifting image at face value.
