Artist's description:

Hiraeth, a feeling of homesickness for something or somewhere that does not exist anymore or has never existed in the first place was always a word that struck a cord with me and a feeling that resonated through me and my nostalgia towards places I have never visited or have only seen as a result of other people's creative work, mixed with how rarely I am able to leave London I had to do something about it.

My love of art nudes and working with nude models and creative souls has always been something that I wanted to push into landscape work. It has taken years for me to develop the easy relationships and confidence needed to start putting things into action, not to mention months of planning and scraping the pennies together to try and make it happen.

In a break from my usual way of doing things and the long term nature of this project I have opted to keep this series open ended in reach and publish it as individual chapters and sets, each one self-contained and each image limited to a single fine art edition printed to the highest possible standard, signed and numbered as 1 of 1 and also provided with a certificate of authenticity to pair with the final image.

For the prints I have chosen to use a museum grade 315gsm cotton bright white print stock, coupled with Epson ultrachrome pigment inks prints will last well over a century or two in the right conditions and when handled with care.

Each print will be presented with a 1 inch art border around it, fully framed into a satin black deep box frame, gallery sealed and ready to hang on your wall. These are all hand printed by myself and can be signed either on the front or on the back of the print, I prefer to present my work without the clutter of a front facing signature but the choice is entirely yours.

Each set will also receive a full release separately available in self-printed folio-style edition collecting all of the images from each set in a leather covered snap shut spine around A3 gloss photographic prints presented in an open edition format. These folio releases will be limited to 100 copies and I hope to make them into quite a spectacular companion set to the entire project.

As an open ended project I plan on shooting with a large number of models across both the UK and the wider World to give a potentially life-long set of work that will cover landscapes, coasts, woodlands, rainforests, mountains and deserts.

I am accepting commissions with this project for location shoots around the world, feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss arranging something specific for you and we can chat about it.

Chapter Two of the Hiraeth series reunites me with Suzzi a Czech model whom I have worked with for my “Time Stands Still” project previously, she was visiting London for some shoots and got in touch so I snapped up the opportunity to make the most of it and make her a worth addition to the project.

With a limited time and budget options were scarce for shooting so I went to explore Epping Forest in North London the weekend before, a really nice stretch of easily accessible woodland, clearings and lakes was dotted around the area so I decided we would shoot there rather than look further afield.

Shooting on the day was a mixed bag with light, the forecast 30c of light clouds and heavy sunlight was nowhere to be seen in typical British fashion, having been slowly melting into a pool of gristle for the last two months this felt like a blessing in some way though and the more heavy clouds added a soft golden light to some of the images shot in the clearings among the dry roasted grass stems and thistles.

Human traffic in the woods proved somewhat problematic to work around easily for a nude themed shoot, the constant sound of footsteps and mobile phones ringing, dogs running free and cyclist coming out of nowhere left us less time and options for shooting that I had hoped for, a small group of children also forced us to abandon shooting by the lakeside as they had been trying to follow us and sneak a look.

The woods themselves have a stunning range of felled trees, ferns and open landscapes so I could really not fault them in the slightest, between vicious mosquito attacks at least. A lack of bright light led me naturally to wanting a high prevalence of black and white imagery for chapter two, Suzzi’s pale skin tones naturally complementing the silvered skeletons of felled trees and the golden grass and scrub.

Suzzi was her typical fluid self and took to the location like a true pro, keeping her eyes out for passersby whilst hanging from the remains of trees, braving thistles and brambles without complaint and nestling down into the baked, cracked earth for some of my favorite shots of the series.

Please note that by default stance I operate profit sharing with all of my models, all sales of our work go directly towards funding our art as well as towards paying our rent, covering travel and feeding us, all of the photographic pieces I create are a collaboration between myself and my models regardless of if they have had rates paid for their time or if they have kindly agreed to work for free.
