Artwork description:

Limited Edition large colour linocut of Herstmonceux Observatory in East Sussex.

This is a small edition of 8. As always with linocuts, each print will vary slightly since they are produced by hand. The ink is rolled separately for each print and transferred to the paper by rubbing the back with a baren and a wooden spoon. (Takes a while!).

Each print is numbered, titled and signed on the front by me, the artist.

The actual print is 28cm wide and 37cm high (roughly A3 - so pretty big) and sold in a white mount which brings the overall size to 40cm by 50cm - which is a common size and easy to frame.

The linocut is printed in water-based inks on acid free paper and comes with a mount, backing board and cellophane wrap so it is ready to frame. Please note international orders will be posted without a mount and rolled in a tube with acid-free tissue.

Herstmonceux Observatory, now known as the Observatory Science Centre, was previously the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

Britain's premier home of astronomy left London in the 1950s for the clearer skies of the Sussex countryside. However, with advances in both technology and international co-operation, the Observatory became redundant. The main telescope was eventually moved again, to the Canaries, and the site at Herstmonceux has now become a Science Centre, open to the public. Six telescopes still remain there, and there are often stargazing evenings.

I like the eccentric mid-twentieth century style of the place, with its copper domes and pathways over lily ponds. It's a shame its glory days were so short.

I have another linocut "Herstmonceux Castle" which shows the impressive brick castle next door to the Observatory, and part of the same estate.

Materials used:

water-based printing inks, colour, lino
