Artist's description:

In Greek mythology Helen was considered to be the most beautiful woman in the world. She is usually referred to as Helen of Troy or Helen of Sparta. She brought about the Trojan war when she left her husband Menelaus (King of Sparta) for Trojan prince Paris.

I painted this as part of a series based on tragic characters from Greek mythology. There are many differing versions of this popular myth, some say Helen loved Paris, others say she was abducted by him or that she manipulated and betrayed him and many others. That mystery was one of the reasons I began this painting. Was Helen the tragic lover or the manipulative traitor?

This painting is all about mystery and deception; the untainted beauty of Helen sat among the broken swords and fallen soldiers, and the warm and clam colour palette that contrasts the tragic subject matter.
