“Hasty Departure” originated from a harrowing story told to me by a fellow art lover. This gentleman had seen some of my storytelling paintings and told me that he had in his possession the storytelling photo of a lifetime! He had been camping with some buddies in the Boundary Waters in (2006?) when a forest fire broke out and they were told to evacuate the area IMMEDIATELY! His canoe was the first one to make it to the exit landing. As he was waiting for the other canoes to make it to safety, he took a photo of them still out on the lake and the entire woods of the island behind them was on fire. It was apparently a very narrow escape, and even though I never got to see the actual photograph, his story gave me goosebumps listening to it and I knew it would make a dramatic painting.
