Original artwork description:

"Hammam"
Mixed Media Painting on Cradled Panel (sides are painted with a stencil pattern)
36" x 36" x 2"

Hammam, in many cultures, is the bathhouse. Sloughing off dead skin is the metaphor for releasing that which holds us back; allowing the dead to die and all that no longer serves a purpose in our lives- time to let go. This painting, completed in January 2018, is based on a visual journal/sketchbook image I created while at an artist residency in Morocco in 2016. I added portraits from my figure drawing group, Morocco patterned stencils, collage and hand lettering. There is so much detail and layering in this painting; you can look at it for years and always notice something different. My Artist Residency in Tetuoan, Morocco in 2016 was a life changing experience, and this painting investigates what some of those life lessons were and how they continue to unfold.

Materials used:

acrylic, paint, collage, stencils, china marker, pen, pencil, marker, gel medium, glue,
