Artist's description:

This is painting is based on the Cambridgeshire Fenland landscape. In these paintings I am use the materials taken from the earth to recreate something of the tactile qualities we all recognise in the natural world; ploughed fields, river beds, vegetation and rocky outcrops.

I am attracted by the circularity of this idea and the alchemy that takes place as different natural elements are returned to their rightful home....... in truth, they never left. Many artists use materials and pigments extracted directly from the earth; some are synthetic compounds based on complex chemical formulae. In painting we use them to fashion constructs, visual illusions, fabrications to trick the eye into believing that these could be the objects themselves. But we all know this is a conjuring trick....and we willingly collude in the process of temporary recognition and suspend our belief for those brief moments of looking.
