Foo Hai Ch'an Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in Singapore. Inside the main large prayer hall, there is a 9.9 m (32.5 feet) tall 1000-hands Guanyin (or Guan Yin) statue of buddha, which is the South Asian adoption of Indian-origin Bodhisattva, the feminine representation of compassionate qualities of Buddha. The representation of Guanyin in this monastery is very similar to the way Goddess Durga is portrayed in Hindu mythology. With several hands equipped with various weapons and tools it brings to mind the very image of Goddess Durga in her demon slaying avatar. Some Buddhist and Christian observers have commented on the similarity between Guanyin and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
