This painting is a prototype for a custom painting portrait that I offer in my other shop. I was inspired by tiny portrait paintings inside the Duomo in Orvieto, Umbria Italy.
This type of profile portraiture was popular in Renaissance Italy. The person depicted was often a wealthy aristocrat and the centrality of the pose reflected the awarness of their important role in the universe.
I got this idea looking at one of the chapels in the Duomo in Orvieto which contained many small portraits of patrons that had commisioned the chapel construction.
HOW THIS PORTRAIT IS DONE:
- I carefully drew this portrait onto a canvas board.
- It was painted using the "grisaille" technique (a technique executed entirely in shades of grey or of another neutral colour.)
- Once dry, I applied a yellow ochre acrylic background. Afterwards the gilding glue was applied and then the faux gold leaf.
- Once the entire painting dried, I protected it by brushing it over with natural lacquer.
AFTER PURCHASE, I'll create a video for you esplaining a little bit more about this painting and send you a YouTube link for viewing.
