This 2015 piece is the my first foray into using recognizable faces in my work. My work is visually inspired by fashion photography, and often I find celebrity fashion photos that catch my eye. In general, I am most engaged by the pose and facial expression not who the actual person is; however, I thought that incorporating these well-known people into my work might add another dimension. This piece incorporates Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande. They are girls in boxes, which raises some interesting questions for the viewer. Why are they depicted in boxes? Are they in boxes or does what they portray encourage girls to be put in boxes? And when you think about it, we are all in some sort of box or another, perhaps trying to get our or trying to fit in. This isn't any less true for the famous, despite what they want us to believe or what they believe about themselves. We are all human and face common struggles.
