Artist's description:

Inspired by the buildings and shoppers of Croydon, south London, I created this scene of contemporary life, set in a real place. I used bright, naturalistic colours to create a positive atmosphere, rather than adopting an ‘urban decay’ meets ‘gloomy concrete’ approach.

Composition is important to me and using a square format forced me to consider the arrangement of figures and architecture within the frame. The work was built up with layers of acrylic paint, followed by a layer of clear acrylic medium. This enabled me to add some of the lines using laser printer paper. Finally, the black lines and details were added using black acrylic ink.

My loosely-drawn style hopefully adds some energy to the painting, both to the people and to the buildings around them.

Materials used:

Acrylic, acrylic medium, acrylic ink, printer toner

George Street, Croydon (2016)
