Artist's description:

"Gasping for Air" is the first in a series which explore what it is to be a woman.

No longer are we defined by our wombs, or are we? ‘Emotional’ they call us, ‘angry’. But don’t we have a right to be mad?

I often feel I've been duped into a sense of freedom that in reality doesn't exist. Freedom dances on the horizon but I'm trapped in a riptide that requires me to be anything but my true, free self. This distorts my understanding of who I really am. I don't want to define myself by my gender but it consistently defines me. It affects the way I am treated, am talked to, what is expected of me. I feel I have to shake what is instinctual and natural to me to gain equality. Subconsciously I often feel inferior to my masculine counterpart though I can read that he often knows equal, or less than I.
