"Behind the Blue Door" was created in artists oils on stretched cotton canvas. It's a labor of love that took months to complete as I worked to create the combination of shadow and light that evokes the mood of the old-masters. This work has over 50 layers of translucent glaze applied in the fountain, shadows, and reflected light scattered around the scene. The central focus of the painting is the fountain, which is alive with blooming lotus blossoms, koi fish, and a resident frog. In the center of the pond, a fountain of grape ivy cascades downward toward the water, and in the background the statue of an angel rests against a wall covered in vines. The courtyard is filled with blooming hibiscus, geraniums, bougainvillea, and roses that crawl up the fountain wall and spill into the cool waters of the fountain. Flower petals are scattered around the edge of the pond, and the stems of the lotus blossoms and pads can be seen wherever light is penetrating the water. The mood is tranquil, and the imagery evokes a sense of peace, joy, and happiness. The sides are painted a deep greenish-black in keeping with the tones of the painting, and the work is ready-to-hang.
