This is a piece of Conceptual Art
With the work, it depicts a Crown, the Crown is Symbolic of some may say the “King”, I don’t consider myself to be the “King” as in “Elvis” nor Artist Gavin Turk as “Elvis”, nor a “Queen”, nor a “Prince” as in “Prince Charming”, maybe the “Jack” as in pack, maybe “Black Jack” in Playing Card Pack, like playing the card games, and I think I’ve reached the pinnacle of my Life as “Jack” and happy and content with my Status. This is also inspired to a vacation to a Las Vegas, USA, a few years back, and came across a few images of “Elvis” and inspired previous work “Rock n Roll Star”
The “King” is a metaphor for the pinnacle of Life, (metaphor can be object, animal etc such as “He is brave as a Lion”). I am suggesting that when we are Born we are ranked low in Life maybe #2 in the playing card pack, though Life and experiences and guidance of others, wealth and status we slowly, move up the pack, like “Game of Life”, until some of us may reach “King” status like “Elvis” or may cheat to imitate “Elvis” like Gavin Turk in the work “Sliver on Sky Blue Elvis”, 2005.
In the work there is contradiction, some may say the real “Elvis” is Dead, as in the quote “Elvis isn’t Alive” but others may say “Elvis isn’t Dead!”, his still Alive amongst us, like in the image of Gavin Turk as “Elvis” in the work “Sliver on Sky Blue Elvis”, 2005
In the work depicts the colours of a Roulette Wheel, as in Red or Black, upper colour Black (modified to "Royal Blue"), lower Red, and set on a complementary background colour of Green (Green is opposite Red on Artist colour Wheel)suggesting that the House always Wins!
In the work I am suggesting that there is a new “King” in the Art world, Gavin Turk, though his depiction of “Elvis” and in a previous work “Cavey” which was exhibited at the Royal Academy, Final Degree Show, and was “Failed” by the institution. For me is the true “King” of the Pack, failing then succeeding!
