The Piggy Bank – A combination of farm and factory, imagines a new evolutionary phase in the history of the Bank of England. At Threadneedle Street, the existing Bank emerged over a 100 year period, through a process of gradual accretion. In economically and politically turbulent times there was an imperative to establish a physical symbol as an absolute embodiment of wealth, and power. Lender of last resort and clearing house the central instrument of economic security and trade.
The project reflects on a very different World – Post Global financial crisis, in a fragile landscape of lost trust; Piggy Bank, attempts to re-establish a clear relationship between fundamental markets and units of tangible capital. Continuing the eastwards migratory trend of financial markets and capital, from city to dock. Piggy Bank is set within a new agricultural estate at the banks of the Thames, at Thamesmead.
Embracing theoretical and emergent technologies the proposal imagines a future in which the traditional barriers between the academies of science are transformed. Biochemical, pharmaceutical and genetically modified substances are transformed simultaneously at a molecular and industrial scale through use of new Nano technological processes. Pigs are farmed for their adipose, the generation of electricity, bacteria for the extraction of gold from Salt Water.
