This is the second version, in a series, following previous version “10 Year Itch”, and has been inspired by the Hollywood Icon Film “Grease (1978)” and more recently “Grease - Live (2016)” TV Show, in which the film starring John Travolta (as Danny) and Olivia Newton-John (as Sandy) is set in the 1950s at Rydall High School.
Similarly, with the previous version, I have taken a difference stance by taking it out of context, juxtapose, and displaying this within the penultimate scene, when they are at the Fun Fair, and singing the song “You’re the One that I want” (see link below). During the scene they enter the Fun House, which Danny holds onto the stair side rails bars, and move inside together, dancing on moving belt, with the other T-Bird gang hanging on and watching from the outside from behind bars. Similarly, in this work, I am suggesting you are audience participation; possibly, part of the T-Birds Gang, and part of the audience are watching Danny & Sandy watching from the outside behind the bars & rails. The Primary Blocks of colours of Blue, Red & Yellow on inside the walls of Fun House, have been transposed onto the Floor, creating a Disco Dance Floor.
Danny & Sandy are standing on a Disco Dance-floor, gridded into squares, and represents a secret message in Binary Code. An infill square of either, Blue, Red or Yellow indicates a 1 in the Binary Code, such that from left to right it will display a Letter from the Alphabet, and forms words. Inspired a chess board, gridded 8 by 8, compete against each other, like gangs T-Birds and Scorpions. Also, inspired by the Disco dance floor lights of the 1970s.
The upper Birds have been included from my previous work “Tug of War & Peace (2015)” which depicts two Doves (Birds) pulling on an Olive Branch with word “Peace”, ironically similarly from the gang name T-Birds and their rivals the Scorpions in the film "Grease"
I have been inspired by simple outline drawings, in thick ink, with infill textures, and comic text, such as the work by Roy Lichtenstein, Michael Craig-Martin and Julian Opie, Angela Bulloch.
