Artist's description:

For me, inspiration comes from many places -- the natural world, archaeology, history, science, even cartoons. I love the idea of telling a story in one image.

“Fossilized Nautilus” (FN) was born from my love of paleontology. I love thinking about the world as it was and capturing those elements to bring into our own spaces. FN is based on an actual Dactylioceras fossil, from the Jurassic period, approximately 172 million years ago. (This technically is not a Nautilus, but “Dactylioceras” isn’t as well known and just isn’t as sexy. Both creatures are in the same scientific class of “Cephalopoda”.) Such a fantastic specimen would most likely be in a museum or an expensive collection – thus I would personally never be able to own one. FN came about to see if I could create a fossil for myself, and it turned out so well, I wanted a fine patron to enjoy it as well.

The sides of this piece are finished, so it can be hung unframed.

FN is intended to be a beautiful art piece on its own visual merits that recalls a time of before . . ., but if you want to pause a moment longer, I hope the image makes you ponder our world.
