Artist's description:

In 2010 i embarked on a dark road after watching the film 'From Hell' For two years I read every book about the crimes of 'Jack the Ripper' I wanted to create the portraits of the real woman who fell victim. They only ever seem to be regarded as prostitutes which they really werent and their image is remembered as their macarbe violent photographic remains. I set about constructing what i thought they may have l;loed like from the autopsy photographs and photographs of living and past relatives. I created five portraits of the canonical victims. The hand-made shelf-frames are papered with the police reports of their demise and their autopsy results, the shelves contain genuine articles from the period of their life and ultimate death. The few worthless posessions that were found in their pockets or on their person are replaced here with identical and genuine replacements, i.e. an 1888 penny for an 1888 penny etc. Each of the paintings bears the image of one of the real suspects hidden in the painting.

In this case Annie Chapman, She is portrayed at the very spot of her death in the back yard of a house in Hanbury Street in London's Whitechapel district. the shelves contain. a brass ring, real surgeons knives from 1888, coins from 1888, a genuine 1888 police whistle, blocks of wood from a Hanbury street address (the location in Whitechapel where she was murdered) Residents charged onlookers a penny to view herbody from an upstairs window) the wood come from the beams of the neighbouring houses which I obtained when they were being demolished., A genuine handwritten letter pertaining to the location from the period.

The paintings have been exhibited only once and recieved international coverage.
