Focusing on the way we all relate to the subject of guilt, punishment and sexual desire, the artist has created an attempt to portray a situation of uncertainty. This image is a kind of Schroedinger's cat - we cannot say precisely what situation is described, yet we can fully comprehend that it is very dramatic.
Only through complete understanding may we accept our fate. The characters in this painting seem to be static, immobile. Yet beneath them the giant hiatus of emptiness is present. We are almost certain that they are falling. But what if they are not? What if the characters have dealt with their emotions and sorrows and are now flying serenely in deep acceptance of all their own fears.
