Flower Power was one of those paintings that represent a turning point or advancement in a person’s painting style. It is the first one where I was able to utilize drips without the painting looking like a “drip” painting. I don’t remember much about how I did it because I was so in-the-zone! Usually when I finish a painting session, step back and think, “How did I ever do that?” then I know it will be good! First it was like, “Yikes!” Then, “WOW, I like it!” Then it won an award the first time it was exhibited, and one online. It was also selected as one of 13 of my paintings for a solo exhibit at Squire Sanders in Rockefeller Center and finally it ended up on my own wall! I live in a Manhattan apartment, so wall space is scarce. I finally had to take it down to display some newer work. That is why it is for sale now. But, I still love this painting!
It is bursting with energy and spontaneity. The paint is thinly applied, except for the light cadmium orange burst. I utilized graphite for depth and subtly - and for creating so much depth. It would look fabulous in a contemporary environment, but would also add excitement to a traditional room.
