Artist's description:

The idea behind this particular collection is to explore the boundary between the abstract and the figurative. I want to draw people’s attention to the abstract in everything around them. If you think about it every image ever created is abstract, just a collection of lines and shapes and tones and textures, and it’s our brain that sorts these things out and makes them intelligible. I enjoy exploring that mid point, the pleasurable tension that exists between sense and nonsense.

On a more practical level my aim is to create a collection of pictures that when viewed from across a room appear to be completely abstract designs, but when seen close up reveal themselves to be constructed from identifiable photographic elements. I’m on a bit of a kaleidoscope kick at the moment but I intend all sorts of weird and wonderful (and attractive) ideas to make their way into this collection (it’s my chance to go mad on the computer, and also raid my not inconsiderable photographic archives for interesting ideas).

I create all my own prints and spend a lot of time getting them right, making them ‘sing’ if you like. I consider printing to be half of the overall photographic process. It’s a very demanding discipline to master but I think the printing process offers such an amazing opportunity to inject feeling and personality into an image.

Materials used:

For those interested I use an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 printer, which uses Ultra-Chrome K3 inks, onto Epson Premium Semi-gloss paper, which ensures a very high degree of tonal and colour accuracy.
