This drawing shows Pebbles, one of my happy hens, mid-flight en route to a big handful of corn.... All my hens always are desperate for food and will cause a rugby-scrum scuffle for the smallest morsel.....
Pebbles is a Bluebell hybrid, a fantastic trustworthy layer of big brown eggs and is one of my more vocal girls, happy to yell to the world when she has laid, she is also equally happy to slink into the studio which overlooks their half of the garden at the slightest chance!
The hen's make me smile and I often watch them from my studio window; they are always busy, but often not the safest creatures when they become airborne - this is usually reserved for getting to the food first or in prison style escapes!
The drawing is on smooth 'Bristol Board', a heavyweight white paper that is very popular for artists working in a realistic style as it holds detail well and allows soft veils of colour to be applied with precision.
The brand of coloured pencils I use are the Derwent Coloursoft range,
