Artist's description:

‘Fingerprints’ 2013
Mixed Media and Acrylic on paper
23x33in
This piece was created during my time in Liverpool. I remember I had come across the artist Andres Serrano and therefore I began to do a lot of thinking and research surrounding the topic of Identity. After a lot of research and writing in my journal about my own ideas surrounding the validity of identity based on appearance, I decided to stop thinking and start painting. It was around 3am and I had placed a blank A1 sheet of paper onto the wall. I began by sticking random sized pieces of masking tape onto the sheet. Next I mixed up a paint palette consisting of reds, blues, purples and white (which is often my main colours of choice). I started to quickly apply the paint with a palette knife, however the process was becoming more and more spontaneous and subconscious that I was suddenly using my hands and fingerprints to paint.
I always say this is my favourite piece because I feel as though it was not me who created it and I know I could never consciously recreate anything that even comes close to the spontaneous expression that was created in this piece.
