This is one of a series of pieces inspired by a visit to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the fertility symbols I found there. I begin by throwing a stoneware form on the wheel for the human form distorting and working the piece as it dries. The archway is carved from a solid piece of clay and joined to the base after firing. I have a clear picture of what it is I am making before I start but often this idea changes in the making and pieces that were not designed together come together in the end.
