This is an imaginative painting. The main character, the half man, half stag fiddle player has appeared in a number of works - I am not entirely sure what he represents. I like the viewer to look at the painting and make up their own mind about what it means. Sometimes I am very clear before starting a painting about what the image will be and at other times the image comes as part of the painting process. When that happens, as in 'Fiddle Player in a Dark Wood', I feel as though the images come from a deep, unconscious part of me, I like the mystery that surrounds them and the magic that it brings. This painting is highly textured in thick oil paint. It hangs very well as it is in its unframed state.
