The 'Fern & no red berries' series of images are made by layering fragments of drawings and photographs in the computer with digital painting. The initial photographs of ferns and other plants and flowers are shot in a controlled growing environment such as a large hot house, greenhouse or orangery. These are usually part of the estate at stately homes across England, Wales and Scotland and Kew gardens in London.
I aim to make the images both bold and decorative with a quiet or subdued grandeur about them. This is created in the brilliance in colour, luxuriousness of textures and the simplicity and purity in the compositional elements which draw the eye in to the image.
