Artwork description:

Taken during the UK Covid-19 lockdown of March, April and May 2020, and included in an artist's book documenting daily walks during this time, this photo is one of many taken of foliage shadowed against walls, fences and pavements. The unseasonably sunny weather gave me many opportunities to explore the shadows of both organic and man-made forms, and these record a very specific time of day and time of year that reflects thematic concerns with the role of time, place and the transient nature of ephemera. In this photo, where the shadow is shown in negative, the texture of the fence becomes almost fabric-like, with the effect of Indonesian batik, or Japanese shibori.

The image is printed on archival quality bamboo inkjet paper, handmade at the Agawami factory in Japan. It is a soft paper with a subtle texture and slightly warm tone that complements my work beautifully.

Materials used:

Epson archival pigment inks on Agawama Washi Bamboo 170gsm handmade paper
