One of the two males of the lion pride I was following in The Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, seemed to be transfixed by one of the cubs that a pride lioness had presented while he was having a siesta.
When a lioness nears the end of her pregnancy, she separates from the pride to give birth and remains in isolation with her litter for up to six weeks.
