This painting was inspired by a dramatic storm off the Island of Portland in Dorset, England in early 2015. This is a wild and dangerous coastline and there has been a lighthouse at the island's tip to protect sailors for centuries. This painting is not a literal representation of the scene (there are actually more buildings) but as the work progressed I found myself stripping out these non- essential elements as they felt like a distraction. The key components of the scene that day were the sea, the sky, the land and the lighthouse and this painting seeks to capture the elemental relationship between them.
