Artist's description:

Katsushika Hokusai was a great master of Ukiyo-e. Releasing his famous "36 views of Fuji" series he said that hadn’t been done nothing to compare for all 70 years of his life.
I have never seen Fuji alive. Here is my lovely Etna in Japanese style. Acrylic 105x105sm.
It was a task to paint a square peace of drywall. I had two ideas in my head: "modern Madonna" and Japanese engraving. After couple of sketches for Madonna I realized that the effort will not pay off – too complicated for this circumstance. At the same time, I was rather familiar with view of Etna and it was not a great effort for me to stylize it.
Etna è grandiosa! She is really impressive, proportional and totally dominates over the landscape. When I saw her it was a beginning of eruption, and that specific smoke was very contrast when dawn.
The main composition was born easy. I made a sketch with marker, printed out few copies and colored them to try different options.
In most of Hokusai’s works you can find some people. Making a "Japanese" landscape, I added a man in a yellow hat looks similar with a classical Japanese hat “Casa”. After putting a basket on his shoulders, I decided that associations with Japan are enough.
But just at the very beginning I’ve got a feeling that there must be something to make a triangle in the left to somehow compensate that wonderful circling tree in the right. It means adding something higher then man beside him on the right ore lower on the left. So his donkey appeared.
By the way, that circling tree in the right has a special direction of the crown left-to-right to save you from vertigo when looking at it :)
