Lovely small portrait of a young woman from the Napoleonic era. Called Empire Girl because of the dress she is wearing, this was called an Empire dress and was very popular in the late 1700s through to the early 1800s.
painted with loose confident brushstrokes the piece is a sketchy work that from a distance comes together to form a lovely portrait. The hands have been left the most sketchy as I think it evokes a sense of movement and gives a nice contrast to the softer face.
