This piece was original conceptualized to represent the idea of a Purple Heart in honor of Memorial Day here in the United States. The heroes that have fought to represent freedom and equality should not be forgotten for their sacrifice. This day is used to remember their struggle which is why I sought it to be a great representation to use a faded and aged gold background. We often refer to them as the greatest generation for how they sacrificed for not only the good of our nation but the world. The purple and blue colors are used to represent the thought and ideals of a Purple Heart medal, while the woman is used to represent the beauty of their passion and love.
This painting incorporates the use of aged acrylic for the background and Grumbacher oil paint for the primary image. The techniques used to create a vibrant display of color were inspired by local street artists and the urban feel which is ever present in New York City. Multiple layers were used to create the depth that is present as well as multiple solvents to create the distinct water flow style reminiscent detail.
