Artist's description:

This painting was inspired by Virgil's epic poem, the Aeneid. After fleeing Troy, Aeneas moves west. One of the places he visits is Carthage, ruled by the beautiful queen Dido. Dido and Aeneas fall passionately in love. But Aeneas has to move on. He is destined to bring the statues of the household gods of Troy to Italy. Leaving Dido heartbroken on the shores of Carthage.
