Artist's description:

This painting is inspired by the way that many plants and animals use thorns to defend themselves from attack. When you look at thorns objectively, they create beautiful shapes and are part of the innate artistry of nature. Once I had started the painting I also realised it had a strong resemblance to a starfish or sea urchin. It was created using watercolour paint, pen and wax crayon.
