Decorative Chinese influenced contemporary semi-abstract, suggestive of water, islands and trees. Colours include turquoise, scarlet, Prussian blue and burnt umber with areas of pearlescent glaze and occasional metallic detail. As a child I loved my grandmother's recitation of the Willow Pattern story, and since my six months English teaching in Jiangsu Province in 2005, when I learnt that the mist-shrouded rocky peaks, anciently twisted pine trees, and sky-reflecting lakes (not to mention tiny, flat- bottomed skiffs, conical hats, bamboos and egrets) in those single perspective scroll paintings, vertical and horizontal, reflect real landscape, my work has undergone intermittent spasms of Chinoiserie. However, it is in a robustly intricate western style, quite unlike the airy elegance of traditional ink brush on silk technique.
