This is a painting that was exhibited with 'Keep Your Head Down' showing the heartbreak suffered by so many families during the First World War when many small villages lost virtually all of their menfolk.
I wanted to try and show the desolation of the women and children left behind. My grandfather did return but what he saw and went through left it's mark on him as it did so many others. The scars are not always visible.
The hardest part was painting the 'Tommys' over the background without disturbing it as it is a watercolour. Something I have only attempted in oils before with something like lace on a dress. Speed is the answer, and no room for mistakes!
