The ‘Cycles’ series chronicles the changing of the seasons and the wax and wane of the moon. Through the lens of the traditional Celtic festivals and the astronomical calendar, these images evoke feelings of mystery and awe, and help us to understand our place in the natural world.
In Celtic mythology, the feminine has three aspects: the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. Each of these corresponds to a stage in a woman’s life, a phase of the moon and also to certain times in the year. The four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water bring further influences that were relevant to the fertility festivals of the Celts.
The Mother of Water lives in the deep of fresh water lakes and rivers, still full of life but less vibrant than the Maiden’s tropical seas. In early autumn, salmon return to their birthplace to spawn. They change colour, and with incredible strength and driven by the instinct to reproduce, they seem to fly upstream.
