The ‘Cycles’ series chronicles the changing of the seasons and the wax and wane of the moon. Through the lens of the traditional Celtic festivals and the astronomical calendar, these images evoke feelings of mystery and awe, and help us to understand our place in the natural world.
This festival takes place of the 1st of May and was traditionally celebrated on Tara Hill in Ireland. There at the top of the hill, two fires would be lit. To ensure health and fertility, animals would be lead between them and young couples would dance around them. Entire communities would celebrate the coming of summer and abundance. Of course the Maypole dance is a well-known tradition, also to ensure the well-being and fertility of the people and the land.
