The initial idea came from reading about the cultivation of bacteria and artificial cells in an artificial nutrient medium and the maintenance of cells in conditions suitable for growth. The way I was drawing at the time was very spontaneous and what emerged seemed to be very organic, one shape feeding off another, metamorphosing and transforming over the course of two sketchbooks. In the final images I painted out a lot of the drawing, giving rise to much sparer, almost disconnected shapes. The final image, "Desert Life" hints at a whole organism that has grown from the culture and having lived a life so returns to it's component parts thus completing the cycle.
