Artist's description:

A semi-abstract cross/crucifix/crucifixion that I painted in 1996 as part of my final portfolio of work for my BA in fine art. At the time I explored the theme of "self-destruction", with crosses or crucifixions often featuring in the paintings.

In hindsight it is a religious painting. I have since realized that the self-destruction theme goes hand-in-hand with the Christian ideal of overcoming the flesh and becoming a spiritual being.

This painting (and all my paintings in this period) was done almost exclusively using my fingers to apply the paint, rather than a brush. I love the directness and physical-ness of painting this way and the technique was more in line with the aggressive, "self destructive" marks I was trying to make.

This painting is unframed. It is stretched neatly with edges painted white. I would prefer it remains unframed. If a frame is used I recommend a slender, plain wood frame.

Materials used:

Oil on canvas, stretched over wood frame. Strips of off-cut canvas was applied and painted over to enhance the 3D effect in this painting.
