The series of paintings « Lullabies for Grown-ups » is based on the idea I found in Tantric philosophy : the Universe itself consists of two Divine beings, a God and a Goddess, making eternal love . The Universe itself is a divine, infinite sexual act. These paintings are inspired by the thought that we are recreating the fundamental act of Universe in a smaller level. Our practical minds are capable to understand the overwhelming truth in the moment of ecstasy. You will find galaxies and supernovas dancing together with loving couples in these paintings. There are delicate flowers and roaring predators which reminds the fragile and dangerous side of passion. The series is inspired by ancient Indian erotic miniatures. These artists depicted love with adorable naïveté and truthfulness, they possessed a wonderful sense of delicate colors and their work has truly influenced my creations.
Let yourself be transformed by love !
« Cosmic Lullaby » is inspired by feelings of spring and creation which are around us in this moment. The most creative and powerful of seasons urged me to search inspiration in most powerful scientific images : supernovas, the turning points of the Universe. Love and passion is so much like a supernova, like an explosion of a star which enables us to outshine the whole galaxy. In the background of « Cosmic Lullaby » you will see the power and energy of a supernova transformed into a couple of lovers made of light. Another couple is hiding under the water as a reminiscence of primordial ocean and all the life on the Earth comes from it. Water is the only element which was not created in the six days of creation, as mentioned in the Bible : « the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters ». So we can see the two elements, the air and the water are present in this painting.
Between the different sources of inspiration for this painting there is also a passion for dance. I love magic moments of classical dance when a dancer defies gravity with his/her skills and talent, almost floating in the air. I've known that feeling myself and I love to reflect it in my paintings. This painting is inspired by the art of the dancer Carlos Acosta, his personality urged me to paint the mysterious genius of love, a grown-up cupid from ancient times. He has wings of a butterfly on his back, they are transparent and strong. The wings underline the power of love to lift us up and give a glimpse of bliss and divinity to our souls. There is another flying creature, a peacock, beautiful and cruel, it pierces the hand of the beautiful boy. The spectator feels the aspect of a sudden danger which is present in love.
I love to create an expressive, even dramatic texture in my paintings. They are multi layered. I combine thin layers of transparent color with relief touches with a palette knife to create a rich surface. Each painting begins with a choice of right canvas and making a gesso. Sometimes I sew smaller pieces of canvas together as a textile mosaic, creating the first layer of different textures. In « Cosmic Lullaby » you can still feel the texture of rough canvas that lays underneath the multiple layers of color. The story of each painting really begins with making a gesso, each time it is a little bit different as I play with gelatin, chalk and different pigments, creating a second layer of the painting. The composition and the universe of each painting begins a long time before the first line of drawing.
