Sculpture for me, is about discoveries. This work epitomises that philosophy. Birch plywood is a high quality material, often used for furniture. work starts as an 18ml 5'x4' board. To cut out the continuous line, i draw out two close parallel lines, snaking back and forth around the entire area of the board. Then with a jigsaw, i cut along one line and down the parallel.
Once cut the piece roll up in alternate directions turning the flat line into a three dimensional jumble. It can do this for two reasons. Firstly the grains in the many layers of plywood alternate direction which gives huge strength and takes away any flaw that are found in natural wood. Secondly, the swan neck curves that make up the design and the consistency of the line thickness give the work a mind boggling flexibility.
This work changes shape every time it is moved.
