The harbour was built in the 17th century by the Cary family and was the only safe haven on the coast between Appledore and Boscombe. The coast of North Devon was very rocky and treacherous. There are cannon barrels (not shown in the painting) that came from the Spanish Armada that are used as bollards on the quay.
It is not a pretty pretty place but I this it is very beautiful and full of character, and the little chap keeping an eye on the boats obviously agrees.
Most f the time taken was in preliminary sketches as I wanted to paint it quickly to keep it fresh with a peaceful feeling.
