Artist's description:

‘Claudia’ was inspired by my love of one of the great Italian Masters, Michelangelo da Caravaggio. He is famous for painting figures that disappear into the shadows, you could say he was the founder of ‘Hollywood’ lighting way before its time, the Renaissance era, circa late 1500’s and early 1600’s. I travelled to Florence in 2011 and studied at the Angel Academy of Art during the summer and learnt some of Caravaggio’s painting techniques. When I returned home I found a beautiful German girl named Claudia that was backpacking through Australia and arranged to take some photos of her in low light. The actual photos are beautiful in their own right, but I am a painter so I wanted to create the painting in the Caravaggio technique whereby you paint anything that you want to stand out, in titanium white and then when that is dry, you paint over it in the desired hue, that is why the red satin fabric is extremely vivid.
